In Her Own Lane: A Conversation with Selina Woo Bhang

Can you walk us through a typical day in your life?

Most days I wake up early, maybe around 6:30-7am. I take an hour to cook myself breakfast and brew my pour over coffee. Right now, I really enjoy beans from Yunnan. I’m particular about my lifestyle mostly because my career requires me to work long hours and intense deliverables (and age)! But on days where I can breathe, I do a lot of my ‘life’ chores. I dedicate the hours to laundry, meal prep, decluttering, bills, exploring the hardware store, haha. But now, I’ve been quite consistent with my workouts! I do yoga at home, then balance it with long runs around Makati, barre, and the gym for strength!

What was your first creative outlet, and how did you know you wanted to continue down this path?

Art, as a whole. I was already drawing, tinkering with GIMP (basically a free software like Photoshop), taking photos, and writing short stories when I was so young! I always knew; there’s really no way to explain it. Art spoke to me because that was the medium I can solidify my feelings and experiences. I forced myself to be a good student with math and very right-brained stuff, but the only way I knew how to express myself was to make something… exist.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I mostly read books and watched films as a kid. I never got to experience a gaming console haha. So as much as I want to gush about my favorite artist and categorize all of them, truthfully, my biggest influence is my background. I grew up in the province, so my core as an artist always revolved around my hometown Luyos, Nueva Ecija. I love nature, it’s a part of who I am and my spirituality.

Three words to describe your personal style?
Contrast. Post-punk. Sexy-feminine.

Where will we find you after 5 on a Friday afternoon?

Omg. I will be at the park decompressing from everything. I literally touch grass on a Friday afternoon. That, or I’m coming from the sauna, lol.

What's your most played song right now?

Supercar - Baby Once More

Dream collab?/gig?

I wanna make titles for movies. Make my first 20 minute short film. Meet a lot of the online people I met on my platform IRL. My online connections from different parts of the world are my heroes, they do a lot of great work for so many established personalities! I learned the value of manifesting lately, so this is me doing it. Hehe.

How can we support you?

Aw man, support on your own free will, haha! It’s a tricky question for me, but I guess just be happy at everyone's own pace. :)

What advice would you give to young models?

I wouldn’t necessarily categorize myself as a model anymore. I do get very commercial jobs as a talent until now, but from the beginning of my modeling journey I always wanted to be known for me. I wanted to be booked for ‘me’. But my advice is to know what you really want to do. Maximize a lot of the exposure to brilliant talent! I learned how to crop photos because I worked with a lot of photographers. Learned about lighting by observing the gaffer and cinematographer. There’s so much to learn from a set of hundreds of people involved. You can be your own brand or entity without having to be an influencer!

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Be really caring towards documenting your life. Archiving. It’s really fulfilling to look back at when you’re older. You don’t also have to succumb to peer pressure and trends, trust your own thing. Protect your lane and yourself, but be ready to give out love, too!
